Algeria 1857 Djurdjura en Kabylie Victory Propaganda Medal
Offered is an unusual medal, issued for distribution to the local population of Algeria by General Jacques Louis Randon (as Governor) to publicize his victory at Djurdjura en Kabylie in 1857 (and likely to send a message to any other rebellious-minded local inhabitants), Gadoury#42var. These medals appear to have been struck for some time after the initial issue, producing a wide range of varieties, and even showing some evidence of having circulated as local tokens.
This example silvered, 33mm, and displaying an unusual ‘devolved’ inscription - in all, a piece which displays remarkable condition, size, and characteristics for the type. We have tracked down a few others of this exact type (none as nice as this), but they appear to represent a rarity in this admittedly under-studied series.
