France 1311 Bourgeois Simple, Dit Obole Bourgeois
Offered is a lovely example of a Denier Bourgeois, also known as an Obole Bourgeois, or a Bourgeois simple, issued by royal edict on 26th January 1311, under the reign of Philippe IV dit ‘Le Bel’ (Philip IV, the Fair), Duplessy#233, Roberts#2641. The inscriptions read ‘+PHILIP PVS REX’ and ‘BVRGENSIS NOV VS’ respectively. A deep patina, sharp detail, as well as a regular, unclipped flan all make this a wonderful example.
