France (Clermont) 1185-1215 Silver Hammered Denier
Offered is a fascinating feudal Denier, issued anonymously in Clermont between 1185 and 1215, BD#379, PA#2253. Depicting the Virgin Mary surrounded by inscription ‘SEA MARIA’ on the obverse, and an ornamental cross and inscription ‘VRBS ARVERNA’ on the reverse, this charming hammered piece is a most attractive example of high medieval numismatics. Although displaying some minor flan issues typical of the issue, this example retains good detail, and would make a great type example for a scarce regional issue.
