Britain - 1805 Admiral Nelson Death Medal
Offered is a wonderful example of the 38mm white medal version of the 1805 ‘Vicecom’ Admiral Nelson death medal, Royal Museum Greenwich: MEC1558; BHM 581; Milford Haven 1919, 505; Bramsen 439; Julius 1423 (AE), Eimer 965.
The obverse of this piece depicts the Admiral's bust facing left, hair short. Full uniform, ribbon over right shoulder, three stars on breast. Inscription: H . VICECOM . NELSON. The reverse, for its part, features a three line inscription within a wreath of laurel and palm branch. Inscription: H . VICECOM . NELSON OB PATRIAM PVGNANDO MORT . OCT . XXI . MDCCCV. (Died fighting for his country).
These medals are scarce to begin with, and examples in white metal are almost always encountered corroded or otherwise environmentally damaged - luster is virtually unheard of. This example shows only the slightest hints of cabinet friction, and retains a very pleasing amount of luster. A top notch example of a highly sought historical commemorative medal.
