Offered is a wonderfully struck 1859 ‘Handel’ musical performer’s bronze medal sunk by by William Joseph Taylor for the famed Handel memorial festival held at the Crystal Palace. This 51 mm piece features a portrait of Handel facing left, surrounded by the inscription ‘GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL’ on the obverse. The reverse features the inscription ‘CENTENARY COMMEMORATION / CRYSTAL PALACE MDCCCLIX’ surrounded by palm leaves.

The Great Handel Commemoration of 1859 held at the Crystal Palace was a monumental event to celebrate the centenary of the composer’s death. Over 460 orchestral players, 2,765 choristers and 81,260 ticket holders attended this three-day festival. The two former groups, as well as stewards were awarded these medals, with the latter being marked ‘steward’ after the name. This example is of the type awarded to performers (which far less often come to market), and is marked ‘C. P. PERKINS, PERFORMER’ on the edge.
