Germany - 1916-18 WWI Gold Donation Medal
Offered is a blackened iron, 41mm medal issued by the Deutsches Reichsbank to individuals who voluntarily donated private gold to the national reserve. This program was intended to more effectively back the German Mark and alleviate the wartime inflation which was devastating the economy.
This medal was designed by Hermann Horaeus, who was also involved in some of the production, which was also contracted out to other firms owing to the general success of the donation scheme. This being said, our example is a fine casting, meaning that this is likely either an earlier production, or from the Horaeus workshop itself.
All in all, a fine example of a popular and historically significant medal.
