Poland 1977 Olympic Committee Medal (1980 Lake Placid / Moscow Games)
Offered is a handsome, 72mm bronze medal struck by the Warsaw National Mint to celebrate the progress of the Olympic Committee established for the 1980 Lake Placid and Moscow games, MMP#372. Designed by noted mid-century sculptor and medalist Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz, this example is of a second reverse variety, with the obverse having been first used on a similar medal the year before.
Owing to the fact that 3000 of the first type of this medal, and only 1000 of this type were struck, it is speculated that this piece comes from a batch produced specifically for presentation to athletes participating in one of the two games. All in all, a gorgeous piece of medalic art, and an important piece of Olympic memorabilia.
