Scotland - 1829 Silver Edinburgh University Award by W. Wyon

$175.00

Offered is a splendid silver educational award from the University of Edinburgh, awarded to one Thomas Tulloh in 1829. This large medal, coming in at 50mm in diameter, and weighing in excess of 60g, bears an impressive bust of Homer on the obverse, and the inscription H ΠAIΔEIA KAI THΣ ΣOΦIAΣ KAI THΣ APETHΣ MHTHP and wreath around engraved inscription on the reverse.

This medal, (as Eimer#1177, or Fitzwilliam Museum CM.796-1989, Grimshaw#18, which are, in fact, both the same medal) is of a type which remained in use at least until the mid-1860s, but despite this long tenure, is offered surprisingly infrequently. The size, quality of manufacture, and pleasing tone all make this a thoroughly impressive piece.
