United Kingdom 1830 Earl Grey Medalet

€15.00

Offered is an interesting 23mm medalet commemorating the 1830 ousting of the Duke of Wellington government, and the installation of the pro-parliamentary reform Earl of Grey - this example struck in copper, BHM#1442, Batty#2193. The obverse satirically displays the venerable Duke on horseback trampling the English lion, with the inscription insinuating that his actions were not in the interests of the nation. Indeed, Earl Grey would become one of the main drivers of the 1832 passing of the Reform Act which, among other things, laid the groundwork for abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire beginning the following year. This piece in above average condition for the type, which is usually found battered or environmentally damaged - indeed there is some evidence that these made it into circulation as farthings.
