Mexico (Colonial) 1740 8 Reales from the Wreck of the Hollandia

$400.00

Offered is an enchanting 1740 silver 8 Reale coin, or ‘Pillar Dollar,’ recovered from the famous wreck of the Hollandia, KM#103. This example has been encased in the much-sought contemporary (to discovery) sterling Hollandia ‘treasure’ pendant enclosure, and comes with a silver chain.

The Hollandia was a 700-tonne, 150-foot, 32-cannon Dutch East India Company (VoC) trading vessel which sunk on her maiden voyage from Amsterdam to Batavia in July 1743. She had been laden with coin bound for the Dutch East Indies when she became separated from her escorts, and foundered off the coast of the Isles of Scilly, with a loss of all hands. After doing archival research, Rex Cowan (a London attorney) led an expedition to recover her treasure, which eventually succeeded in 1971.

The coin itself is a Mexico City mint coin, and although displaying surfaces typical of sea-salvage, this piece retains very good detail within the context of the coins recovered. Time has also graced this example with a lovely gunmetal patina which intensifies around the devices, really setting off the remaining details. In all, a fascinating piece with a superb provenance.
